Rethink What it Means to Teach Through an Infographic

For my ThinkTank’s Wicked Problem, we are researching the idea to rethink what it means to teach and reinvent everything about teaching. Through our virtual meeting, we realized how broad this topic truly is and how all of the stakeholders involved are going to have different questions and ideas about this wicked problem. After much deliberation, we were able to shorten our list of 50+ questions down to just four we are going to be focusing on. Our questions are in order of importance or priority and they are the following. Each question flows right into the next, so they are all interconnected to our wicked problem, as demonstrated by the infographic below.

Why is redefining teaching critical?

  • Before we can come up with solutions to rethink what it means to teach, we have to understand why redefining teaching is so important to education.

Is good teaching a science or an art?

  • We have to understand what it takes to be a good teacher and whether or not it is more of a science or an art (or maybe an equal balance of both).

Why do students need to be quiet to learn?

  • Some teachers are under the impression that students have to be quiet in order to learn and we are going to be exploring why this is the impression and whether this is truly beneficial. (Teacher-centered to a student-centered classroom.)

Why do many students see their teachers as a different species?

  • We need to understand the viewpoints that students have of their teachers in order to start transforming the way in which a classroom works. (Teacher-centered to student-centered.)
